When the hot summer months approach, as a novice jogger you may be concerned as to whether it’s safe to jog in black flag weather (a military term warning of temps 90° and above). Rest assured you can still get your runner’s high even in less than ideal temperatures, provided you take a couple of precautions. According to Active.com, the best way to have a successful summer’s run is to slowly adjust your body in the first two weeks of hot weather. Keep your midday runs to 30 minutes or less and don’t sprint! Your body should adjust in 10 days to two weeks. Jogging early in the morning when temperatures are at its coolest is best. Be sure to wear loose, light-colored clothing (preferably mesh). Heed this advice! Because as we all know, light colors reflect the light, dark colors absorb. If you must wear headgear it should consists of a light, breathable fabric. Body heat escapes from the head and you should wear gear that allows this escape. You don’t want to be the one at the side of the road headache-y, oversweating, and feeling dizzy from heatstroke. Lastly, and most importantly, hydrate! You should drink 8 oz. of water every hour, more if you sweat like crazy. Drinks with electrolytes to replenish what the body has lost work just as well. Oh, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen, even on those cloudy days. If you think you’re protected from ultraviolet rays by the clouds you’d be dead wrong. As you can see, you can get your summer jog on with no problem if you take the proper steps to protect your most precious resource…your body.
