Danbury reached a high of 70 degrees today under mostly sunny skies! Although the calendar says March 12th, warm temperatures and an increasing sun angle will become responsible for an increasing UV index as well. The dangers of sunburn can yes, start as early as now.

The UV index for today March 12th, was ranked a 5 in Hartford, CT. This is the high end of moderate risk for skin damage.  The EPA even states that for this number one should   cover up if outside especially near mid-day.  If outside at mid-day, try to stay in the shadows.  While you may be thinking that this seems a bit too precautionary especially for early march, skin damage is possible! Skin damage can lead to skin cancer ultimately.

The following is the UV Index Scale

Less then 2: Low

3,4,5:    Moderate

6,7:      High

8,9,10: Very High

The UV index forecast for tomorrow is a 3 for Hartford. Although temperatures are forecast to be above average again, cloud cover may inhibit sunshine during the mid-day time frame. As we approach the vernal equinox and eventually the summer solstice, the noon time sun angle is increasing. This means the UV index will also be creeping up as well. Keep in mind that UV number, and keep yourself protected! Enjoy the sunshine safely!
