Yesterday there was a report of three people in a kayak who fell in the water in Norwalk. One of the three was not wearing a life jacket. They were also dressed in shorts. Luckily, they were able to get back into their kayak and avoided any injuries.

Upon hearing of this incident I was quite shocked at the risk they put themselves in. Currently the water temperatures are still between 44 and 49 degrees in both the lakes and Long Island Sound. Water of this temperature is very hazardous and can be fatal if you were to be immersed in it for just a little while.

As a kayaker myself, I usually wait until May 1 before I head out onto the lakes; at that point the water temperatures are usually a bit safer. For the Long Island Sound though, I would usually wait until almost Memorial Day.

However, if you’re planning on going out now, I would also recommend wearing either a wet suit or dry suit, and you certainly do not want to go out wearing  just shorts and a t-shirt!  It’s always essential to be wearing a life jacket no matter what time of the year it is!
