It is important to be sun safe while out on the boat this summer season. Being in a boat can cause you a nasty sun burn because the water reflects the sunlight towards your body.

The American Cancer Society offers many recommendations that can help you stay sun safe!

1) Cover-up - If your out on a boat, your UV radiation can be intensified by the reflection of the water. Your best bet is to wear lose fitting long sleeves, and light-weight pants.

2) Use Sun Screen- Using a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 is recommended for any exposed areas. Remember to apply sunscreen about 30 minutes prior to being outside for it be effective. Remember to reapply after swimming or prespiring.

3) Wear Sunglasses- Don’t forget about your eyes! Your eyes are at risk for developing cateracts while being out in the sun. The best bet is wrap around glasses for full protection.

4) Wear Hat- A hat with at least a 2 to 3 inch brim is recommended. It will protect the your ears, nose and scalp.

It is also recommended to limit sun exposure during the hours of 10am and 4pm, when the rays are most intense.
