With summer rapidly approaching, you’ll be hearing Meteorologists use the term heat index in the coming weeks.  The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.  Today (May 28th) in North Haven the high temperature was 89.5 and when you factor in the 55% humidity, the heat index was 95.5 degrees. I could certainly feel the heat today when I was working around the house.  With the sweat pouring off of me, I got a quick reminder to stay hydrated in these conditions.

I was on my roof today making some adjustments to my weather station and noticed how much hotter it was up there vs. the temps on the ground.  This made me think of different places where temperatures can rise rapidly and one of them is your car.  It doesn’t take long for your car to reach over 100 degrees after being parked with the windows up.  Sadly, at least 30 deaths a year are due to children dying in heat trapped parked cars.  It doesn’t need to be that hot outside for temps in your car to skyrocket either.  In 2007, a 3 yr old died after being left in a parked car for 90 minutes.  It was only 81 degrees outside!  Click on the following link to read more about keeping your pets safe in cars.
