The day was filled with a severe weather outbreak, which brought hail and even a tornado.
"A National Weather Service Storm Survey Team confirmed a brief tornado touchdown on Great Hollow Road [in Cornwall] within a greater area of straight line wind damage consistent with a microburst."
There were numerous reports of hail damage and widespread power outages.
The map above shows the severe weather setup. Heat led to some very steep lapse rates across the Northeast, in addition to plenty of energy available in the atmosphere. Kick in an approaching cold front and this sparked many severe thunderstorms.
