As of this evening Tuesday, July 31, 2012, the National Hurricane center has issued a statement about an area of low pressure off the African coast (about 1,000 miles west of Africa). The statement stated that the low pressure area has become better defined and now has a 50% chance of becoming a tropical system.
Now it is still up in the air where this system will go and how much it will strengthen. However, there are two possible tracks it could take.
The first track it could take is right into the Gulf of Mexico. The other track is for it to get steered up or very close to the east coast as it goes around a large ridge over the Atlantic.
It is still too early to have any definite track or intensity forecast, but it is worth keeping an eye out.
