The first weekend of August is now here and it's gonna be hot and very humid...and it looks like it may end with some very heavy rain late Sunday.
The image above is the surface map for Saturday afternoon.
We've got a big warm front all the way to our north into Canada and a strong cold front way back to the west. That puts us in the warm sector and with a southerly flow, heat and humidity will be surging up from the Gulf of Mexico.
Saturday will be mainly dry. Within this hot and humid airmass, a storm or two could pop up, but most areas will be dry. If you do see a storm, it will pass very quickly but could have some heavy downpours.
We have bigger concerns for Sunday. To begin with, there will be more clouds than on Saturday. The cold front back to the west will be pushing through on Sunday night into Monday morning, but out ahead of that front on Sunday afternoon, we could see some scattered showers and storms. But the key word is "scattered." Not everyone is gonna see rain, but any storms that form could be strong to severe with very heavy downpours and very strong winds.
But the best chance of widespread rain will be after midnight Sunday night into Monday morning. The cold front could bring very heavy rain and flooding. Since the front is coming through overnight, that will limit the severe weather threat, but with tons of available moisture, it could get very heavy into Monday morning's commute.
