Tropical cyclones can often spawn tornadoes as they approach land.

The cyclonic flow around hurricanes, combined with strong winds and wind shear aloft, can kick off the right amount of spin in the atmosphere to cause tornadoes.

As a result, a large area from the Florida peninsula, westward into Louisiana, including downtown New Orleans, is under the threat of tornadoes.

Because of this, the Storm Prediction Center has posted Tornado Watches.
