The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Upton, N.Y. launched a weather balloon Wednesday morning and released the results.
The balloon was launched at Brookhaven National labs on central Long Island and was carried by the prevailing winds towards the Nantucket area. The balloon encountered peak winds of 178 MPH at 34,215 feet above the ground. Jet stream winds during the cold season can become very strong, although winds close to the Earth's surface are generally much lighter. The balloons are launched twice per day to gather weather data and information used for meteorologists and computer forecast models.
