Here is the updated Drought Map for the United States. In Connecticut, we are not experiencing any drought conditions at this time. Last year we were in various drought stages for most of the year.
Even though the U.S had above average precipitation for the first month of 2013, where it fell were to the extremes. Louisiana had its wettest January on record. Other states such as Mississippi, Tennessee, Michigan, and Virginia all had top-ten wettest Januaries on record.
The other extreme were the states that had top-ten driest Januaries such as Connecticut, Florida, and California. It is expected that Florida and California will worsen in their drought conditions.
The drought is the worst across the central United States in South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. There is good news for this region however. Currently, the GFS and Euro are both calling for a big enough shift in the jet stream to bring some low pressure systems through the area.
