During the past 2 weeks I have been enjoying snow shoeing throughout Connecticut’s State Parks. It’s a great way to stay in shape and see some scenic views. Just yesterday I was up in New Farfield at Squantz Pond. The day was sunny and cold, and very quiet. It was just perfect !

The advantage of using snow shoes as opposed to just regular walking is that your body weight will be distributed over a larger area so that your feet will not sink in as far into the snow. Especially when the snow exceeds 8” there is quite an advantage. They can also help out on icy-packed down snow for traction I have found out!

Snow shoeing is a simple activity with minimal technique to learn. If you can walk, then you can snow shoe! It takes no special skills at all. Additional equipment includes poles for stability on hills, boots, and gaiters which help keep the snow out of your boots.

When you're done with your adventure, you will feel the workout, it’s an excellent aerobic activity that will burn lots of calories, especially when trudging through deep snow!  I encourage everyone to try it in these final remaining weeks of winter.
