Mayor Art Ward recognized the city's Citizen Emergency Response Team (CERT) on behalf of the City of Bristol, at the monthly City Council meeting held Tuesday April 9th 2013 at 7pm. Each team member who staffed shelters that were opened during the cold spell of January as well as during the blizzard that hit the state in February of 2013 was called out by name and awarded a certificate in recognition for their volunteer efforts.

The CERT program is a nationwide one that provides training to volunteers who then can assist their communities when events occur that push the limits of everyday normal resources. It is a great way to volunteer in your community while learning new skills or contributing skills you already have.

As you might imagine, CERT is often called upon to assist during times of bad weather. Paying attention to the weather is crucial for CERT groups across the country. Whether they are monitoring storm cells, high winds that can feed wildfires, keeping an eye on approaching hurricanes, or just being aware of heavy rains that might cause flooding, these teams need to be able to muster their resources to lend assistance to first responders when called upon.

Whether you want to volunteer or just want to know where to go when the weather gets rough, it is worth being prepared and knowing what to do.

Contact your community's fire department, police department, or town/city hall to see if a team exists in your community or to just find out more information on your community's emergency plans.
