The heat index exceeded 100 degrees across most of Connecticut today.

Heat index is how hot the air actually feels. It factors in humidity with the air temperature. As the humidity rises for a given temperature, the heat index increases.

At the official reporting stations across the state, the heat index was as high as 104° in New Haven and 103° in Stratford, Chester and Hartford.

The actual air temperature reached the low to mid-90's for most of the area today. With dew-points in the upper 60's to mid-70's, that is why heat index values were several degrees higher than the actual air temperature.

For Friday, similar conditions are expected. In fact, as more humid air works in, some places could see even higher heat index values on Friday.
